David Goldblatt (1930-2018)

Den sorafrikanske fotografen David Goldblatt gikk bort den 25. juni, vel 87 år gammel. Hans besteforeldre kom fra Litauen til Sør-Afrika i 1893, der deres barnebarn David ble født i 1930. Han fikk en utdannelse innen handelsfag, og begynte å fotografere i 1948. I 1960 var han godt etablert som yrkesfotograf. Han beskrev seg selv som a self-appointed observer and critic of the society into which I was born.

De internasjonalt best kjente bildene fra apartheid-tiden ble tatt av fotografer som Ernest Cole (1940-1990) og Peter Magubane (f.1932), men David Goldblatt nærmet seg apartheid-problemet på et mer indirekte vis, ved å antyde hva det innebar for den som levde med det – svart som hvit.

Karolina Ziebinska-Lewandowska, kurator ved Centre Pompidou, bemerket dette i forbindelse med en retrospektiv utstilling ved sentret tidligere i år:

David wanted to remove his judgement from his photography.He always said that if a photograph serves a certain idea, even if it’s a good idea, the idea always takes precedence and the photography then contains a judgement. He felt that he should record the facts, and leave the judgement to the viewer.

I 2006 mottok David Goldblatt Hasselbladprisen.
