Edward Hicks (1780–1849)

Edward Hicks var aktiv både som kvekerprest og dekorasjonsmaler i Pennsylvania. The Peaceable Kingdom er kjent i over 60 versjoner.

Inspirasjonen er hentet fra Esaias 11, 6-8, her gjengitt etter King James Bible fra 1611, som sannsynligvis var den oversettelse Hicks var fortrolig med.

The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den.

I bakgrunnen til venstre er det gjengitt inngåelsen av Treaty of Shackamaxon i 1681 mellom nybyggere under ledelse av William Penn (1644-1718) og den lokale urbefolkningen. Dette finner vi også som hovedmotiv på et maleri fra 1847.
