The mentor, who spent more than 50 hours with Usman Khan after his release from prison, said he had witnessed him lose his temper during an intervention meeting, which had revealed a dark side to his otherwise “suspiciously rehearsed” persona.
He said Khan became “enraged” in a mentoring session because he was frustrated by the probation service’s restrictive licence conditions, which included an electronic monitoring tag and closely supervised access to the internet.
He said that he had revealed the incident in his session assessment report, which was sent to the Home Office and the probation service, but he heard nothing back.
The Home Office, however, contacted him immediately after the London Bridge terrorist attack on November 29, when Khan killed two people and injured three others — but only to advise him against speaking to the media.
“The ideology needs to be challenged without fear of being too politically correct.”
