Lewis Hine var utdannet som sosiolog, og lærte på egen hånd å fotografere. I 1907 ble han tilknyttet Russel Sage Foundation som fotograf, og det følgende år National Child Labor Comittee. Senere dokumenterte han American Red Cross‘ hjelpearbeid i Europa under og etter første verdenskrig, og dertil bygningsarbeidene ved Empire State Building i New York, som sto ferdig i 1931.
