Volden i Charlottesville har ikke ført til nogen pause i arbejdet med at rense offentligheden for personer, som kæmpede for Sydstatene.

Natten til onsdag blev statuer af generalerne Robert E Lee og Thomas Stonewall Jacson taget ned fra deres sokler i Weyman Park i Baltimore og transporteret væk,

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh told The Baltimore Sun that crews began removing the city’s four Confederate monuments late Tuesday and finished around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

“It’s done,” Pugh told the newspaper. “They needed to come down. My concern is for the safety and security of our people. We moved as quickly as we could.”

Statuen vil blive placeret på en kirkegård for monumenter fra Sydstatene. Akkurat det samme gjorde man da Sovjetunionen faldt. Man anbragte kommunist-statuer på særlige pladser.

Men dette er USA. Hvorfor dette hastværk? Og hvor stopper man? USAs fædre var slaveejere. Selv George Washington var det. Skal han også ned?

En som er uenig i udrensningnen af historien er tidligere udenrigsminister under George W. Bush, Condoleezza Rice:

Asked about the value of preserving statues that honor slaveowners in a May interview on Fox News, Condoleezza Rice argued against what she called the “sanitizing” of history. “I am a firm believer in ‘keep your history before you’ and so I don’t actually want to rename things that were named for slave owners,” she said. “I want us to have to look at those names and recognize what they did and to be able to tell our kids what they did, and for them to have a sense of their own history.”

“When you start wiping out your history, sanitizing your history to make you feel better, it’s a bad thing,” the former secretary of state added. (…)

In an interview later that month, Rice addressed Confederate monuments again by remarking, “It’s not actually our heritage, it’s our history,” adding, “We as a people have thankfully moved on.”
